SPONSORS: The following agencies have joined together to plan the first National Family Conference: American Printing House for the Blind, Delta Gamma Center for the Visually Impaired (St. Louis), Hadley School for the Blind, Indiana School for the Blind, Kentucky School for the Blind, National Association for Parents of Children with Visual Impairments, National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, University of Louisville, and Visually Impaired Preschool Services (Louisville). A great deal of hard work and planning has gone into the preparation for this conference, and it will undoubtedly be a tremendous success.
THEME: The theme for the National Family Conference (NFC) is "Families Connecting with Families!" The NFC will provide families the opportunity to meet other families, share with other families, and learn from other families.
HOTEL COSTS: The Galt House Hotel has been tremendously cooperative and supportive of this conference. The suites in the east wing are $85 a night, and the regular rooms in the west wing are $77 a night. Please see Galt House Hotel Registration Form for details on procedures to follow for reserving rooms.
REGISTRATION: Please review carefully the registration information for this conference. The planning committee wanted to keep the fee as reasonable as possible so families could attend. The fee for a family to attend the entire conference is only $100. This includes the reception on Friday night, lunch on Saturday, family activities on Saturday night, and the brunch on Sunday morning. It is important to provide all requested information on the form so the planning committee can best meet your interests and needs. Registration forms are to be returned to the American Printing House for the Blind, c/o Burt Boyer.
PROGRAM: The planning committee worked hard to put together a program that would address the needs of families and young people. We are so fortunate to have many of the leaders in the blindness field presenting at this conference. Please carefully review the program and indicate on the registration form your topic selection for each breakout session. We know this may be difficult because we have so many great topics to choose from for each session.
CHILDCARE: Childcare will be provided at the times indicated on the program. Activities are being planned for young people based on their ages. When you submit the registration form, additional information will be requested so we can best meet the needs of the young people. Please provide this information as quickly as possible so we can better plan for your child(ren).
SPECIAL EVENT: The families activity night is an ice cream social that will provide opportunities for families to relax, share, and have fun. Two individuals who are role models will be special guests and will entertain those in attendance with beautiful music. Georgette Seay is a music teacher at the Tennessee School for the Blind, and Wayne Siligo is a music teacher at the California School for the Blind. Both are visually impaired, very talented musicians, excellent teachers, and wonderful role models. This will be a fun time for sure!
Make your plans early to attend this first National Family Conference!
