Navigating the Rapids of Assessment

Presented by Jane Erin, Catherine Smyth, and Carolyn Zierer. Following a brief overview of standardized assessment concerns for students who are blind and a discussion of both the Woodcock Johnson III and the Boehm-3 Preschool assessment, the presenters addressed the adaptations provided and described future needs for research related to these tests.

Presented by Li Zhou, Ken Perry, and Jeanette Wicker. “Catch” a glimpse of a “new school” of products for the classroom. Products under development include: Light Reflection and Refraction, APH Tactile Compass, Math Graphing Kit, 2D Cross Sections of 3D Models, Tactile Editing Kits, and the Orion TI-30 XS Scientific Calculator.

Twain’t the Same Kind of Maps: Combined Visual, Tactile, and Auditory Feedback for all Learners

Presented by Steve Landau, Joshua Miele, and Karen Poppe. If you came to this session you can say you “Saw-yer” self what a difference a touch pen can make in learning about tactile maps! Get a sneak preview of a joint effort between APH and Touch Graphics, Inc. to produce an Interactive US Map with Talking Tactile Pen. Then, we’ll be “Pudd’nHeads” together to come up with new ideas for future applications and uses for this one-of-a-kind technology.

Navigating the APH Smart Brailler by Perkins

Presented by Stephanie Bissonette, and Cathy Senft Graves. Learn the features and benefits of the APH SMART Braille by Perkins, including the Building on Patterns Kindergarten app. We’ll talk about all the settings available to tailor the brailler to a particular student or students, and how what the student brailles can be shared with parents, teachers, and peers.

Match Sticks: A Game for Students With Visual Impairments, Including Those with Cortical Visual Impairment

Presented by Christine Roman-Lantzy, and Rosanne Hoffman. With Match Sticks, we present the first in a series of leisure time activities designed to be fun as well as to develop vision skills. Match Sticks is an appropriate game for students in Phase II and Phase III of the CVI Range Assessment.

Coming ‘Round the Bend—Wilson Reading System

Presented by Roz Rowley, Mary McCarthy, Justine Rines, and Jeanette Wicker. All of the components of the Wilson Reading System are nearing completion. Learn about the adapted Wilson Reading System designed for struggling readers, see the various components, and learn how the program has been successfully implemented at Perkins School for the Blind.

Step-by-Step: A Comprehensive Text and Interactive Video Tool to Learn Mobility Techniques and How To Teach Them

Presented by Sandra Rosen, and Terrie Terlau. Discover how Step by Step, a complete curriculum of mobility techniques, helps graduate students, O&M instructors, TVIs and VRTs learn, teach, and/or support mobility techniques. Key features of the product are discussed, including study guides, review guides, and interactive video. If you are an O&M instructor, a student learning to be one, a teacher of students with visual impairments, a vision rehabilitation therapist, a supervisor of such professionals, or a materials center staff member, this session is for you!

Destination: Earth

Presented by Elaine Kitchel. In this session the new Section II of the Large Format Atlas, Address: Earth, is introduced. The session was highly interactive and we used pages from the atlas for games that will teach attendees the special and unique features of the atlas while they have fun. The full atlas was on display for attendees.

All Hands on Deck for Boehm 3 Preschool

Presented by Cathy Smyth, Ann Boehm, Carolyn Zierer, and Laura Zierer. A hands-on training for administration of the Boehm-3 Preschool tactile and large print formats. Tips and tricks will be shared as well as opportunities to practice with test items and materials.
