APH Agency Decisions for Textbooks through Accessible Textbook Department Rules 1-19
Rule 1 Basic Principles and General Formats
- Braille Formats: R1, S5b, Page 7.
Word division. An agency may designate a specific reference dictionary and establish policy to govern word division in transcriptions that it sponsors.
Agency Decision: No specific dictionary required, only one that is less than 10 years old. - Braille Formats: R1, S8, Page 12.
Page size, line length, and line spacing. An agency may specify the page size and braille line length to be used in transcriptions that it sponsors.
Agency Decision: K-12: 11 X 11-1/2" paper, 40 cells and 25 lines, single line spacing. - Braille Formats: R1, S9a and S9c, Pages 12-13.
Volume size, numbering, and ending indication. Depending upon its embossing output as either one-side or interpoint braille, an agency may specify maximum braille volume size for the transcriptions that it sponsors. End-of-volume indication is not required. However, an agency may establish policy to govern format for volume ending indication in transcriptions that it sponsors
Agency Decision: Volume size for INTERPOINT pages should not exceed 150-160 pages, which is 80 sheets of paper. SINGLE-SIDE volumes are 80 pages. CONSUMABLE/EXPENDABLE volumes are not to exceed 100 single-side braille pages.
Agency Decision: End each volume with the words: END OF VOLUME # (Center with a blank line above.) End the final volume of each book with the words: END OF TEXT (Center with a blank line above.). End the final supplement of each book with the words: END OF SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL (Center with a blank line above.). - Braille Formats: R1, S12b, Page 14.
Titles and running heads. The headers and/or footers shown printed on all text pages must be ignored in braille. However, if an agency requires use of the book title as a running head, this running head must appear in the first line of every page except the title page and the first page of text in each volume.

Placement of print page numbers. Note: An agency should specify the placement required for print page numbers when two-side embossed braille is produced.
Agency Decision: Number INTERPOINT text pages with the PRINT page number at the end of line 1 on odd and even pages. - Braille Formats: R1, S14, Page 19.
Braille page numbers. Note: An agency should specify the placement required for braille page numbers when two-side embossed braille is produced.
Agency Decision: Number INTERPOINT text pages with the BRAILLE page number on odd pages only, at the end of line 25.
Rule 2 Preliminary Page Formats

Title pages. Items to be included. Each braille volume must contain a title page. It may include the Total number of volumes only if required by the sponsoring agency, see Section 2c(7)(b) below.
Agency Decision: Insert on each Title page: In ---- Volumes and ---- Supplements. This information will be filled in when the total volume count is known. - Braille Formats: R2, S2c, Page 28.
Format for title pages. Use the same format for all title pages throughout the braille edition. An agency may require the use of a specific title page format, e.g., centering or left alignment of items, notice of sponsorship, etc.
Agency Decision: Follow the centered Title Page Sample format. Or use the centered Title Page Template. - Braille Formats: R2, S2c(4)(d), Page 29.
Information about authors, editors, consultants, and reviewers. Consultants and Reviewers. Listings of consultants and reviewers involved in the production of a print text should ordinarily be omitted in the braille edition. However, if an agency requires it, this information must be transcribed using the format provided for acknowledgments in Rule 1, Section 18a(2).

Copyright and reproduction notices. This notice must appear in print in each braille volume, preferably inside the front cover or on the title page; however, an agency may specify its placement in the braille edition.
Agency Decision: The copyright and reproduction notice is centered on the title page, following: Produced by.... Follow the centered Title Page Sample format. Or use the centered Title Page Template. - Braille Formats: R2, S2c(6), Page 31.
Transcription information. An agency may specify format to govern placement of the transcriber's name and the notice of sponsorship.
Agency Decision: The name of the Transcriber or Agency is placed on p2, on the Transcriber's Identification page. See Title Page Sample. - Braille Formats: R2, S2c(7)(b), Page 31.
Braille volume information. An agency may require that the total number of volumes be given preceding the individual volume number on each title page in the braille edition.
Agency Decision: Insert on each Title page: In ---- Volumes and ---- Supplements. This information will be filled in when the total volume count is known.
