Since 1858 the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) has been creating unique products for people who are visually impaired, blind, or deafblind. APH products are designed for infants, preschoolers, students, and adults, both in education and in daily living. About APH Products for Persons with Multiple Disabilities, Including Deafblindness

Children and adults with multiple disabilities, including deafblindness, are as diverse in their abilities, strengths, and interests as the general population. Whereas some APH products have been developed with individuals with multiple disabilities in mind, many others are also appropriate for use by persons with multiple disabilities. When choosing products for any child or adult it is important to keep in mind the age, abilities, and interests of that individual.

Child-guided Strategies for Assessing Children Who Are Deafblind or Have Multiple Disabilities

CVI Perspectives

CVI Perspectives is a three part video intended for educators, families, and health care professionals. It provides information on the causes of Cortical Visual Impairment, as well as methods for identifying and understanding the unique educational needs of students with CVI. The third section presents thought-provoking accounts of families who have children with CVI.

Living with CHARGE Syndrome

This CD-ROM presents the medical aspects of CHARGE Syndrome, and teaches the viewer to observe and analyze the behavior of five children with CHARGE through the use of video clips and a question/answer section.

Sensory Learning Kit (SLK)

This kit is an extensive set of sensory items and written manuals that help the most significantly challenged learners increase their curiosity and develop specific skills. Tools in the kit may be used to help create daily schedules, lesson plans, and alternative assessments for play or functional routines.

About the Core Curriculum and the Expanded Core Curriculum

Core Curriculum

Educators define core curriculum as the knowledge and skills a student should learn by high school graduation. This foundation, for almost all learning, is generally related to academic subjects.

Expanded Core Curriculum

Most professionals firmly believe that visually impaired students need an expanded core curriculum that requires additional areas of learning. Experiences and concepts casually and incidentally learned by sighted students must be systematically and sequentially taught to the visually impaired student.

Dr. Philip Hatlen is the Superintendent, Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Austin, and serves as an Ex Officio Trustee of the American Printing House for the Blind.

Brigance® Diagnostic Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills (Green), Revised, 1999: Student Braille Edition

A criterion-referenced inventory that assesses, on an individual basis, a student's strengths or weaknesses in specific skills areas, the Brigance® has been especially useful in support of IEP development and program planning.

The revised 1999 edition spans grades pre-kindergarten through nine. Innovations include options for group administration, updated grade placement tests, updated skill sequences, and alternative assessment options for pretests and posttests. The student braille edition is designed to be used only in conjunction with the print test. Information on ordering the print inventory can be obtained from the publisher, Curriculum Associates(R), Inc.

An adaptation of the print inventory, the student braille edition includes tactile representations of diagrams where appropriate. The 23 subtests have been grouped into 14 braille modules and made available separately or as a set.

Brigance® Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development (Yellow): APH Tactile Supplement, Revised 1991

A criterion-referenced assessment designed to identify the level of mastery that a young child has achieved on selected skills. This information is important for planning a child's Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Educational Program (IEP). This inventory of early development was designed for children birth through kindergarten.

The Brigance Inventory is a self-directed inventory. The APH Tactile Supplement is designed to be used only in conjunction with the print edition of the Inventory. The Supplement provides alternative procedures and tactile materials for items that involve visual stimuli, with additional directions and suggestions where appropriate.

KeyMath Revised 1988: A Diagnostic Inventory of Essential Mathematics: Braille Edition, Form A

An individually administered content-referenced test that provides a comprehensive assessment of a student's understanding and application of important mathematics concepts and skills. For students in kindergarten through 9th grade.

Results can guide general instructional planning or remedial instruction. They can also be used as part of a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment; in program evaluations; or to assess the scope, currency, and efficacy of a mathematics curriculum.

Includes Embossed Illustrations

The KeyMath-R Braille Edition contains braille and/or embossed illustrations to accompany the regular print edition, which is administered orally. NewWoodcock-Johnson® III (WJ III): Tests of Achievement, 2001: Large Print Edition

With permission of Riverside Publishing Company, the American Printing House for the Blind now offers a full-color large print edition of one of the most widely used diagnostic tests for ages 2 through adult. The WJ III is commonly used to identify learning disabilities and for gathering details on individual strengths and weaknesses in preparation for educational planning.

Practitioners now can derive interpretive information from 19 test cluster scores to help measure performance levels, determine educational progress, and plan interventions. The WJ III Standard Battery provides 10 cluster scores, and 9 additional clusters are provided by the Extended Battery. The Compuscore® Scoring and Reporting system on CD makes it easy to derive and interpret scores and prepare documentation.

This unique CD-ROM is user-friendly and highly interactive as it demonstrates Dr. van Dijk's strategies and techniques for assessing and teaching children with multiple disabilities through the use of video clips, questions pertaining to the video clips, discussion, and relevant literature. Comprehensive assessments of two children are included. Living with CHARGE: How to Deal with Challenging Behaviors and Enhance Communication: A Follow-up Study of Individuals with CHARGE Syndrome

Alphabet Scramble is a read-aloud storybook promoting emergent and early literacy skills. The rhyming story tells of a "family" of alphabet letters as each sets out to explore the page. Quick Pick Math

Math game consisting of a plastic packet containing fifty large print/braille cards. The front and back of each card contains a math question and four possible answers. To play, the student inserts the included tool in one of four holes in the front of the plastic packet. If the answer is correct, the card will slide out. If the answer is incorrect, the card will not pull out, and the student should try again.

Game designed to help young children learn to count to 12 with raised-line symbols and braille numbers. Can also be used with developmentally delayed students.
