Its advantage over other sudoku solving boards is that it allows you to mark possible answers in each box to help you keep track of them, without hundreds of separate pieces. It is also useful for those who don?t know braille but still want a tactile system for solving the puzzles. Like a standard print sudoku puzzle, the board has an array of small and large rectangles. Each block (large rectangle) is made up of six boxes (small rectangles) -- three boxes across and two boxes high. Tactually, the boxes are outlined in smooth raised lines and the blocks in heavier dashed lines. It is especially important to make sure students can track left to right, up and down, and at the same time look for information tactually. Building success through gradual steps should keep the activity enjoyable for students. Includes: -- Two puzzle-solving boards -- Booklets with rules, examples, and puzzles in print and braille -- 150 puzzles provided with answers, at three difficulty levels Recommended ages: 10 years and up. Sudoku Partner 6x6: 1-03719-00 -- $62.00 NEW! TREKS: The Game of Compass Directions Designed to be challenging, educational, and enjoyable. Like a good walk outdoors, it's full of variety! The goal of the game is to be the first player to move your pieces ("treksters") across the board from your home row into the opponent's home row. You can change the game to make the play simpler or add rules to make it more complex. After each move, you must announce the direction and the number of spaces moved by each trekster. For example, "I moved this trekster four spaces east and this trekster one to the south." If you forget to make this announcement, your opponent may undo your move! Includes print/braille overlays and pieces to use for varying the basic game: -- One overlay with the four cardinal directions labeled and another with only a north arrow. -- One overlay with numbered and named streets. With this game variation, you are required to name the starting and ending intersection for each move rather than the compass direction, as in "Moving from Third and Bay to Third and Fox" or "Moving from Second and Hart to Seventh and Hart." -- Buttons that serve as barriers to navigate. -- One overlay with the cardinal compass directions at the four corners of the square. By keeping the movement rules the same, you force all moves to be in secondary compass directions with this overlay. For example, if the north arrow is placed in the upper left corner of the board (from your vantage point), moving a trekster straight ahead is a move to the northeast; moving to the left is a move northwest; and so on. -- Two blank overlays (one that is open in the middle, one with two intersecting bands inside) to which you can add braille stickers to represent street names, street numbers, blocks, landmarks, lines of latitude/longitude, etc. Along with the pieces mentioned above, the kit includes a game board, treksters that are tactually and visually contrasting, a rules and variations booklet in large print and braille, and a set of tactile dice. Recommended ages: 8 years and up. TREKS: 1-08910-00 -- $109.00 WARNING: Choking Hazard -- Small Parts. Not intended for children ages 5 and under without adult supervision. NEW! What Is the Federal Quota Program? What Is the Federal Quota Program? The federal Act to Promote the Education of the Blind provides funds for accessible educational materials for eligible students who meet the definition of blindness. These federal funds are available to organizations in each state to provide materials for students working at less than college level. The organizations may be state departments of education, residential schools, or agencies for the blind. Who is Eligible? In order for students to be eligible for registration in the Federal Quota Program they MUST meet these requirements: -- meet the definition of blindness -- "central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with best correction; a peripheral field so contracted that the widest diameter of such field subtends an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees; or visual performance reduced by a brain injury or dysfunction when visual function meets the definition of blindness as determined by an eye care specialist or neurologist." -- "be enrolled in a formally organized public or private, nonprofit educational program of less than college level" -- be enrolled with the registering school or agency on the first Monday in January How Does the Quota Program Work? A national census taken each January by APH determines the number of students eligible to receive materials purchased from APH using Federal Quota funds. The federal money allotted for Quota each year is then divided among the participating schools and agencies based on the number of students registered. The money does not go to the students themselves, but is credited to Federal Quota accounts administered by Ex Officio Trustees who oversee the funds for their school or agency. The Trustee decides which APH products to purchase with Quota money to best serve all visually impaired students in their system. Who Are the Ex Officio Trustees? Each organization participating in the Federal Quota Program has a designated Ex Officio Trustee entrusted with administering the program within his or her system. Each state, and territory, and possession of the U.S. has at least one Ex Officio Trustee. Is My Student Registered for Federal Quota? There are several ways to find out if your student is registered. -- Ask at your Individualized Educational Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Services Plan (IFSP) meeting. Your service provider should be aware that Federal Quota funds are available, and can tell you if your student qualifies. -- Contact the state department of education (if your student attends a public or private school) or the state residential school for the blind. -- Contact your Ex Officio Trustee for more information. To learn the name of the Ex Officio Trustee serving your area, check: www.aph.org/fedquotpgm/trustees.html and then click on your state, or contact the APH Field Services Department at 800-223-1839, extension 257.
