About the Core Curriculum and the Expanded Core Curriculum

Core Curriculum
Educators define core curriculum as the knowledge and skills a student should learn by high school graduation. This foundation, for almost all learning, is generally related to academic subjects.

Expanded Core Curriculum
Most professionals firmly believe that visually impaired students need an expanded core curriculum that requires additional areas of learning. Experiences and concepts casually and incidentally learned by sighted students must be systematically and sequentially taught to the visually impaired student.

Dr. Philip Hatlen is the Superintendent, Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Austin, and serves as an Ex Officio Trustee of the American Printing House for the Blind.

Since 1858 the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) has been creating unique products for people who are visually impaired, blind, or deafblind. APH products are designed for infants, preschoolers, students, and adults, both in education and in daily living. This catalog is a complete listing of the materials, tools, and supplies offered for sale by APH.

About APH Products for Persons with Multiple Disabilities, Including Deafblindness

Children and adults with multiple disabilities, including deafblindness, are as diverse and varied in their abilities, strengths, and interests as is the general population. Some APH products have been developed for individuals with multiple disabilities in mind, and many others are also appropriate for use by this population. When choosing products for any child or adult it is important to keep in mind the age, abilities, and interests of that individual.

Below are examples of APH products that you may wish to consider for children and adults who have multiple disabilities, including deafblindness.

From Russia with Love and Care for Children with Sensory Impairment and Challenging Behaviors
The latest interactive CD-ROM authored by Dr. Jan van Dijk, Dr. Catherine Nelson, and r. Ton van der Meer includes an introductory course outlining the basic principles involved in assessing challenging behaviors of children with multiple disabilities. It also include video clips of 6 children, as well as a listing of article by Dr. van Dijk and other on challenging behaviors of children with deafblindness and other multiple disabilities.

ToAD: tools for Assessment and Development
ToAD is a set of standardized tools to aid in performing functional vision evaluations or visual skills development activities. The ToAD kit provides tools, toy, and puzzles that assist the educator as he or she performs assessments or activities with students.

APH Homegrown Video Students Who Are Deafblined Using APH Products
This 20-minute video/DVD features 4 students of various ages who are deafblind using a variety of APH products. Meet Blake, Samuel, Tyler, and Lynn as they demonstrate the use of products such as Web Chase, the Perkins Braillewriter, Invisiboard, the Rib-It-Ball, and more.

CVI Perspectives
CVI Perspectives is a three part video intended for educators, families, and health care professionals. It provides information on the causes of Cortical Visual Impairment, as well as methods for identifying and understanding the unique educational needs of students with CVI. The third section presents thought-provoking accounts of families who have children with CVI.

Sensory Learning Kit (SLK)
This kit is an extensive set of sensory items and written manuals that help the most significantly challenged learners increase their curiosity and develop specific skills. Tools in the kit may be used to help create daily schedules, lesson plans, and alternative assessments for play or functional routines.

APH Celebrates 150 Years, 1858-2008

You May Know:
-- In 1858, the Kentucky Legislature chartered the American Printing House for the Blind and in 1865, appropriated $5.00 per blind resident of the Commonwealth to print books in raised letters.
-- In 1879, An Act to Promote the Education of the Blind was passed by the U.S. Congress, creating the Federal Quota system.
-- In 1928, APH began publication of the Reader's Digest(R) in braille.
-- In 1946, the Large Print Department at APH began production of books enlarged from copy prepared on electric typewriters.
-- In 1959, APH produced a Talking Book version of Newsweek(R) magazine, the first recorded weekly magazine in history.
-- In 1988, APH established a computerized national database for locating accessible textbooks, now known as Louis(SM).
-- In 1992, the first APH InSights Art Competition and Exhibition was held during Annual Meeting.
-- In 2002, the Hall of Fame for Leaders and Legends of the Blindness Field was established by the field of blindness and housed at APH.
But Did You Know?
-- APH was chartered in Mississippi first? The Magnolia State passed its version in November 1857.
-- APH became the first print shop for people with vision loss in the U.S. to drive presses with steam power, in 1873?
-- The APH Board President in 1910, Andrew Cowan, was in charge of the Union artillery on Cemetery Ridge at the battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War?
-- The only woman to ever head the Printing House was Superintendent Susan Merwin, who served from 1919 until her death from influenza in 1923?
-- The first talking book issued from APH was Gulliver's Travels, recorded in 1936.

Brigance(R) Diagnostic Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills (Green), Revised, 1999: Student Braille Edition
A criterion-referenced inventory that assesses, on an individual basis, a student's strengths or weaknesses in specific skills areas, the Brigance(R) has been especially useful in support of IEP development and program planning.
The revised 1999 edition spans grades pre-kindergarten through nine. Innovations include options for group administration, updated grade placement tests, updated skill sequences, and alternative assessment options for pretests and posttests. The student braille edition is designed to be used only in conjunction with the print test. An adaptation of the print inventory, the student braille edition includes tactile representations of diagrams where appropriate. The 23 subtests have been grouped into 14 braille modules.

Brigance(R) Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development (Yellow): APH Tactile Supplement,
Revised 1991
A criterion-referenced assessment designed to identify the level of mastery that a young child has achieved on selected skills. This information is important for planning a child's Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Educational Program (IEP). This inventory of early development was designed for children birth through kindergarten.
The Brigance Inventory is a self-directed inventory. The APH Tactile Supplement is designed to be used only in conjunction with the print edition of the Inventory (available from the publisher, see be-low). The Supplement provides alternative procedures and tactile materials for items that involve visual stimuli, with additional directions and suggestions where appropriate.

KeyMath Revised 1988: A Diagnostic Inventory of Essential Mathematics: Braille Edition, Form A
An individually administered content-referenced test that provides a comprehensive assessment of a student's understanding and application of important mathematics concepts and skills. For students in kindergarten through 9th grade.
Results can guide general instructional planning or remedial instruction. They can also be used as part of a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment; in program evaluations; or to assess the scope, currency, and efficacy of a mathematics curriculum.
Includes Embossed Illustrations
The KeyMath-R Braille Edition contains braille and/or embossed illustrations to accompany the regular print edition, which is administered orally.  A manual for administering the original KeyMath Revised 1988 is needed for reference, and is included in the complete kit or can be purchased from the publisher, American Guidance Service(R) (now part of Pearson Assessments).

Individual Test Records (five copies) are supplied with the KeyMath-R Complete Kit. Woodcock-Johnson(R) III (WJ III): Tests of Achievement, 2001: Large Print Edition
With permission of Riverside Publishing Company, the American Printing House for the Blind offers a full-color large print edition of one of the most widely used diagnostic tests for  ages 2 to adult. The WJ III is commonly used to identify learning disabilities and for gathering details on individual strengths and weaknesses in preparation for educational planning.
Practitioners now can derive interpretive information from 19 test cluster scores to help measure performance levels, determine educational progress, and plan interventions. The WJ III Standard Battery provides 10 cluster scores, and 9 additional clusters are provided by the Extended Battery. The CompuScore(R) Scoring and Reporting system on CD makes it easy to derive and interpret scores and prepare documentation.

Child-guided Strategies for Assessing Children who are Deafblind or have Multiple Disabilities

Moving Ahead Series: Goin' on a Bear Hunt
Storybooks designed to be the next step for students who have had experience with simple tactile representations (such as those in APH's OWTL series). Moving Ahead storybooks introduce symbolic representation, more complex illustrations, and an increased emphasis on text by combining tactile pictures, print/braille text, and a fun story.
Goin' on a Bear Hunt is the first title in this series. In the process of hunting for the bear, the reader follows a tactile line through the story, and at the end of the book is a fold-out tactile "map" to use in retelling the story. Braille words are provided on customer-applied labels, allowing the reader to choose contracted or uncontracted braille.

Alphabet Scramble Storybook
Alphabet Scramble is a read-aloud storybook promoting emergent and early literacy skills. The rhyming story tells of a "family" of alphabet letters as each sets out to explore the page. As each letter takes a turn crossing the page--shown as a line of repeating letters--the child has the motivation to track along the line of braille, gaining skill in the hand movements used for braille reading.

Lots of Dots: Learning My ABC's is an exciting raised-line coloring book designed for future large print and braille readers. It facilitates braille character recognition through repetitive activities designed for young children with visual impairments and multiple disabilities.

Quick Pick Math

Abacus Basic Competency: A Counting Method

Sense of Science Series
Sense of Science is a unique series designed to make the world of science accessible, understandable, and enjoyable. All learners can benefit from this hands-on, multi-sensory approach, although Sense of Science is recommended for early elementary age students.

Each State Maps Collection is a set of embossed and printed outline maps for a region of the United States. Use as starting points for lessons on individual states. Guided Art Stories
This set of audiocassettes introduces students to thought-provoking adventures based on characters found in paintings and sculpture. 
First, a verbal description of the work of art is given, allowing the listener to visualize a picture in the mind's eye. After listening to a story about the artwork, the student creates a storyboard or diorama based on the story. The final step is for the student to describe and explain the picture he or she has constructed. An augmentative communication system for learners who are nonverbal and who have multiple disabilities.
