APH Educational Research Staff: Barbara Henderson
Test & Assessment Project Leader
E-mail: bhenderson@aph.org
Barbara Henderson has worked at APH since 1984. Her formal education consisted of a B.A. and M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Louisville. While still an undergraduate, she designed and carried out original research on early childhood language development under the guidance of Meredith M. Richards, Ph.D. of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. During graduate school, Barbara did sociolinguistic research with the late David Maurer, Ph.D.
Before coming to the APH Research Department in 2000, Barbara gained experience in the Talking Book Studios, Computer Technical Services, production planning, and braille transcription (as Editor) departments. These jobs gave her the background she needed in her role as Project Leader, to develop and adapt assessment materials and related materials for visually impaired individuals. Her goal has been to make it possible for VI students to have the same opportunities as their sighted peers to successfully demonstrate their knowledge on the "test," and to take the test independently. A special area of interest for Barbara has been Computer-Administered Testing.
Barbara has collaborated with experts in the assessment field to adapt the Stanford® Achievement Tests, Ninth Edition, for braille readers; the Brigance® Diagnostic Tests for large print and braille readers; the Woodcock-Johnson® III Tests of Achievement for large print and braille readers, and the Test Ready® Test Preparation Series, which comes in three accessible formats: audio, braille, and research-based large print. Barbara would enjoy hearing your ideas for new products and your comments on existing ones.
