APH Employment Opportunities: Special Projects Technician
Under the supervision of the Materials Manager, this six to nine month position is designed to support the pre-production and production divisions of the American Printing House for the Blind. The successful candidate will focus on multiple projects in the area of braille efficiency. This is an on-site position that does not include benefits, nor does it require previous knowledge of braille.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Explore methods to remove DRM protection and extract text, leaving as much of the formatting as possible, from digital files for ease in conversion to braille.
- Investigate the feasibility of using refreshable braille devices to proofread books and magazines.
- Explore scanning techniques to produce a cleaner file.
- Examine ways to reduce the cost of braille production through use of technology and/or more efficient processes.
- Other projects as assigned.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Candidate must have completed basic Engineering Studies.
- Demonstrated experience gathering and analyzing data.
- Must show initiative, problem solving skills and motivation to learn.
- Must be able to use the internet to research and apply knowledge to a real world problem.
- Familiar with the Path structures for the common operating systems.
- Knowledge of running Python programs and installing Python language.
- Knowledge of running commands in a Linux shell and interpreting output accurately.
- Understand basics about file types and HTML markup.
- Basic knowledge about Linux is desirable.
