Two-Dimensional Art

Description: An African American woman on a black background is wearing wire rim glasses and rings on her fingers. She stares straight ahead at the viewer who can see only her face and torso. The artist describes her work this way: "This picture shows the effects of bright light flashed in your face. The dark background allows the contrast of light to cast the shadows on the face. The glare on the eyeglasses disguises the wondering eyes. The hands on the face capture the shock and surprise... The lips are slightly separated to show [a] sudden reaction to an unsuspected gesture. Together these actions explain a glaucoma patient's everyday life."
