What is Louis?

The Louis Database is the key to finding information about materials in accessible media from more than 180 different agencies nationwide.

Louis lists the location information for over 180,000 books and other products in the following media:

Users can also learn about and order APH educational products through Louis.

Since these items are reproduced by organizations all across the United States, APH has collected the information and made it available in one convenient place.

Who can use Louis?

Everyone! Louis is speech friendly and very easy to use for blind, visually impaired, and sighted individuals.

How can I access Louis?

Louis is free of charge!

Can I get Louis training?

APH offers training for students, educators, administrators, and parents. Training helps individuals learn and practice using the Louis Database. The training is provided anywhere in the continental U.S., and can accommodate any age group.

How can I add titles to Louis?

Send a hard copy letter to APH's Resource Services Department, stating that you wish to add your titles to Louis.

The letter should include:

It is important to remember that you must be willing to exchange, sell, or lend the materials nationwide.

Upon receipt of your letter, APH will provide you with the form you will use to submit your titles to Louis.

Note: If your titles are already being listed with the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), please do not submit them to be listed on Louis.

Purchase APH Products Through Louis

To shop online, search for an APH product in Louis and use the "Add to Cart" feature in the product listing.

Named in honor of Louis Braille, the Louis Database allows everyone to locate thousands of titles in accessible media!

What is the APH File Repository?

The APH File Repository contains several thousand electronic files of textbooks that can be downloaded to produce braille. The textbook files are obtained from braille producers and directly from publishers.

Anyone searching the Louis Database will be able to see if a file is available for download. However, only APH Ex Officio Trustees and "authorized entities" (as defined under the 1996 Chafee Amendment) can become Registered Users entitled to log on and download files.
