Louis and the APH File Repository

Tips for Using Braille Files from the APH File Repository

Summary of Steps
  1. Determine whether or not you have an unzipping program such as WinZipTM or PKzipTM on your computer. If not, you will need to download one.
  2. Locate and download the braille file from Louis.
  3. Extract/Unzip the downloaded file.
  4. Save file in titled folder.
  5. Print the file.

Step A
Download an Unzipping Program to Your PC
(For this example, we use WinZipTM)

  1. Go to www.winzip.com.
  2. Download WinZipTM Evaluation Version for Windows 95/98/NT/ME.
  3. Select "Run this program from its current location." The program name will be winzip80.exe.
  4. Install and Run [YES]
  5. Thank you [NEXT>]
  6. License Agreement [YES]
  7. Choose either [PRINT QUICK START] or [VIEW QUICK START]
  8. Select Wizard [NEXT>]
  9. Select "Search Entire Hard Disk" [NEXT>] [NEXT>]
  10. At the prompt "c:\start menu\programs\WinZip," click [Close] box.
  11. WinZipTM Wizard Setup is Complete [NEXT>][NEXT>][Close].
Note: When you unzip a file it will automatically be saved in c:\unzipped.
This program is Shareware. This means that you may download it and try it for free, but must eventually pay for it. Please do not forget to pay!

Step B
Locate and Download the Braille File

  1. Go to www.aph.org/louis.htm.
  2. Select the 2nd option, "Registered Users Search Louis and Download Files."
  3. Enter ID and Password that was given to you from APH [SUBMIT>]
  4. Search Louis as you normally do. If you want to display only File Repository items, click "File Repository" in the Format section of the search page. Click [SEARCH AND DISPLAY RESULTS].
  5. Books that are available for download will say "DOWNLOAD FILE" beneath the title. Click on "DOWNLOAD FILE".
  6. Select "DOWNLOAD NOW." The file will have a name such as "E-97002-TF.zip".
  7. Select "SAVE TO DISK" [OK].
  8. Select "SAVE" [OK]. Make a note of the location where the file is being saved.
  9. At the prompt "DOWNLOAD COMPLETE," click [CLOSE].
  10. Select [Exit LOUIS] and minimize your browser.

Step C
Unzip the Braille File

  1. Double-click the icon on your desktop or in the directory where you saved the file. Double-clicking automatically starts WinZipTM. The filename should be similar to "E-97002-TF.zip".
  2. Select [I Agree].
  3. Welcome to WinZip.Wiz [NEXT>]
  4. At the prompt "Do you want to add c:\windows\desktop to your favorite folders?", select [YES].
  5. Select "Unzip or Install E-97002-TF.zip" and click [NEXT>]
  6. c:\unzipped\E-97002-TF [UnZip Now]
  7. When it says "Unzip Complete", it will open a folder on the desktop. The unzipped files will be in this folder.
  8. [CLOSE] WINZIP8.0

Step D
Save the Braille File

At this point your files are in the directory c:\unzipped. Move them to a floppy, and/or to a folder you make on your computer. If you want them saved to your computer, make a folder with a name such as "APH Braille Files". Then under this folder create folders for each book you download. Put the files in the appropriate folder.

Step E
Print the Braille File

You will need to look at the file name extension *.xxx to determine which program can be used to open the file. See the Repository File Extension flyer for more information about choosing the appropriate program.

If you have a single-sided printer (not an interpoint printer) you may choose to split some larger files. You may call these vol 1 and vol 1a, and pencil the new page ranges or make new title pages. Try to find a section or chapter break to do this when possible.
