The braillewriter has a black cast iron body with wooden keys. Innovations introduced on this machine are a carriage release lever located on the top right side of the machine and the first self-operating carriage feeding mechanism. The braillewriters produced at Perkins were called "Boston Braille Writer" for only a short time. The name reverted to the previous "Perkins Braillewriter."
