Summary Essays written by blind or visually impaired individuals about employment of the blind for a competition organized by Otis Patten, Superintendent, Arkansas Institution for the Education of the Blind. Patten offered cash prizes for the first, second, and third best essays. Submissions were judged at the 1876 conference of the American Association of Instructors of the Blind (AAIB) by Michael Anagnos, Superintendent, Perkins School for the Blind; W.D. Williams, Prinicipal, Georgia Academy of the Blind; and Mrs. A.D. Lord, Superintendent, New York State Institution for the Blind, Batavia. A cash award of $25 for first place went to Ms. Rosa Carey of Chaumont, NY; a second-place prize of $15 went to Mr. H.H. Johnson of Romney, WV; and a third-place prize of $10 went to Mr. A.M. Shotwell of Concord, MI. Volume includes introductory remarks by Patten.
Brown clothbound boards with black leather corners and spine. Gilt lines and a green label embossed "Prize Essays" are on spine. On title page: "Printed and Stereotyped by the American Printing House for the Blind." The numbers 95.7 on one line and .7 beneath are handwritten in pencil at top right on front endpaper.
