Description IBM Braille (Model D) electric typewriter; brown and black aluminum case with a dark charcoal plastic keyboard; black aluminum carriage with gray roller knobs; gray vinyl dust cover; qwerty keyboard with a braille typeface; instruction booklets are included in both print and braille; black rubber power cord; metal plate with the inscription "IBM" is attached on the front, above the keyboard, and another IBM plate is on the center back.

Provenance/History In 1968, the IBM Braille (Model D) Typewriter became the first powered Braille writing machine available for individual use. Its keyboard was almost identical to that of a standard typewriter. Grade 1 braille is typed in lowercase. Both lower and uppercase characters are used for grade 2. The contractions for Grade 2 occupy the uppercase positions.
