Description The Kurzweil Personal Reader, first introduced in 1988 and designed for blind and visually impaired readers, consists of an automatic optical scanner and an electronics unit. The scanner is used for scanning printed materials. The electronics unit has text recognition software, which converts the data into DECtalk synthetic speech. The unit has a speaker, an 18-button keypad on the front, and a serial port for communication with othe computers. Headphones and a cassette recorder can also be connected.
