Admin/Biog History The Arkansas Institute for the Education of the Blind, located at Arkadelphia, was incorporated in 1859. It closed in 1863, during the Civil War, and reopened in 1867. The school relocated to Little Rock in September 1868. The name was changed to the Arkansas School for the Blind in 1877.

Abstract Biennial reports of the Arkansas School for the Blind documenting the school's management, building, and student activities between the fiscal years of 1859 through 1924. They list the trustees, school staff, and students by name, and include a report of financial receipts and disbursements. Title varies and holdings are incomplete.
The 7th report includes "Education of the Blind," a paper prepared by Superintendent Otis Patten about noted blind individuals and the development of schools for the blind. The 10th and 11th reports include embossed specimens of Boston line type. An engraving of the school appears in the 13th report.
Included in this collection of reports is an 1866 "Message of the Governor" containing an appeal by Governor Isaac Murphy to the Arkansas General Assembly to provide a permanent location and support for the school.
