Admin/Biog History The Indiana Institute for the Education of the Blind was founded in Indianapolis in 1847. In 1907, the name changed to Indiana School for the Blind. In 1930, the school relocated to its present site on North College Avenue.

Abstract Printed reports of the Indiana School for the Blind documenting the school's management, building, and student activities. Reports list the school's officers, staff, and students, the school's financial receipts and disbursements, and some include black-and-white photo illus.
An illustration (frontispiece) of the school building, with "Designed &
Drawn by F. Costigan" printed in the margin at bottom left, appears in 16th annual report and in several subsequent reports. 25th annual report includes illustrations of the building floor plans, one on a fold-out sheet; and, a "Summary of Proceedings of the Second National Convention of Instructors of the Blind, held at Indianapolis, August 8, 9, and 10, 1871." 33rd annual report Includes information about the Indiana Point Writer, "recently invented" by J. F. McElroy, Principal of the Literary Department at the Indiana school. The
mechanical writer embossed both braille and New York point and was used by the school's students (p. 198).
Also included, is Enrolled Act, No. 112, originating in the Indiana House of Representatives and passed by the state's General Assembly in 1879, which relates in part to the Indiana school.
