Admin/Biog History Samuel Bacon founded a private school for blind students in Keokuk, Iowa in 1852. The next year, the school was established by the Iowa State Legislature as the Asylum for the Instruction of the Blind in Iowa City, with Bacon as the school's superintendent. In 1855, the name of the school changed to Institution for the Instruction of the Blind, and in 1860 to Iowa Institution for the Education of the Blind. The name changed again in 1872 to Iowa College for the Blind, in 1929 to Iowa School for the Blind, and in 1951 to the present name Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.
