Admin/Biog History In 1852, the state of Louisiana established a school in Baton Rouge for students who were deaf or blind. In 1870, the blind department moved to another location in the city and, the following year, became a separately incorporated school. The Louisiana Institution for the Education of the Blind recombined with the school for the deaf in 1888. Then, in 1890, it was reorganized as a separate school and moved to its present site in 1898. In the 1920s, the state founded a school for African American blind children on the campus of Southern University. The Southern University School for the Blind and the Louisiana State School for the Blind merged in 1978, and the name changed to the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.
