New Board Member at the American Printing House for the Blind
News Release: Louisville, Kentucky, July 3, 2001
Darrell R. Wells has joined the Board of Trustees of the American Printing House for the Blind (APH). Mr. Wells received his BA from Harvard University in 1965. He has been a general partner for the Security Management Company of Louisville, Kentucky since 1972. Since 1993, he has served as the chairman and CEO of SMC Capital, Inc. in Louisville. Mr. Wells also acts as the chairman of the Citizens Financial Corporation.
APH's Board of Trustees sets policy for the world's largest company devoted solely to making products for people who are visually impaired. Founded in 1858, it is the oldest institution of its kind in the United States. Under the federal Act to Promote the Education of the Blind, APH is the official supplier of educational materials for visually impaired students in the U.S.
APH manufactures books and magazines in braille, large type, recorded, and computer disk form. It also manufactures a wide range of educational and daily living aids, such as braille paper and other braille writing equipment, talking book equipment, and synthetic speech computer products. APH's mission is to promote the independence of blind persons by providing special media, tools, and materials needed for education and life.
