Artists who are visually impaired to receive awards at APH InSights 2002 ceremony at Brown Hotel, Fourth and Broadway, Friday, October 11, 6:00 PM

News Release: Louisville, Kentucky, September 27. 2002

Awards for APH InSights 2002, the annual international art competition organized by the American Printing House for the Blind will be presented October 11 at a ceremony to be held during the annual meeting of the Ex Officio Trustees of the Printing House. Thirty-eight blind or visually impaired artists will be honored and fifteen of them will come to Louisville to receive their awards in person. One of the adult attendees has made a delightful hand-sewn quilt. A sculptor has created a whimsical, colored clay "North Woods Wolf" jumping out of a twig-covered log. The eighth grader who created "Rock and Roll Rabbit" and the sixth grader who made a "Talking Tree" will be there.

Several of these artists may be available for interviews.

InSights 2002 features eighty-three works by artists from the U. S., Canada, and Finland. This is the eleventh year for the competition. Participants range from preschool children to senior citizens and include professional artists as well as hobbyists and school art classes.

Three judges from Louisville selected the art works from 488 entries in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. First, second and third place winners were chosen in each of nine categories, along with a selection of entries are included in the exhibition.

The public is invited to view the artwork in the Bluegrass Room, at the Brown Hotel, on Friday, October 11 from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM and Saturday, October 12 from 8:00 AM until 2:00 P.M.

APH InSights is organized by the American Printing House for the Blind for visually impaired and blind artists of all ages. This project reflects APH's mission to "promote the independence of blind persons" by encouraging individuals to create original art.
