Artists who are visually impaired and nationally acclaimed professionals in the field of blindness to be honored at ceremony at Brown Hotel, Fourth and Broadway, October 17, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

News Release: Louisville, Kentucky, October 1, 2003


Awards for APH InSights 2003, the annual international art competition organized by the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) will be presented as part of a ceremony to be held during the annual meeting of the Ex Officio Trustees of the Printing House. Thirty-four blind or visually impaired artists will be honored and eighteen of them will come to Louisville to receive their awards in person. One of the attendees, who is in Kindergarten, has created a lovely painting, Butterflies in Fall. An adult sculptor from Cincinnati has created the whimsical, colored clay, Giant Taco. A ninth grade student from Michigan has carved a Lazy Frog from soapstone.

Awards will be given to three nationally acclaimed professionals in the field of blindness have been selected to receive awards.

ABOUT the awards

APH Wings of Freedom is given on an as-deserved basis, to a person who has done something outstanding or who has provided exemplary leadership in service to education or rehabilitation in the field of blindness and has made an impact on the field over a long period of time.

The Virgil Zickel Award is given to a person (or persons) who contributes an innovative idea for a new product that can be produced by APH.

The Creative Use of Braille Award is given, on an as-needed basis, to a person (or persons) in recognition of a physical product, idea, method, or promotional effort that increases the availability or awareness of braille. It must be currently in production or use.

ABOUT APH InSights 2003

APH InSights is organized by the American Printing House for the Blind for visually impaired and blind artists of all ages. This project reflects APH's mission to "promote the independence of blind persons" by encouraging individuals to create original art.

APH InSights 2003 features seventy-two works by artists from all over the U. S.. This is the twelfth year for the competition. Participants range from preschool children to senior citizens and include professional artists as well as hobbyists and school art classes. Two judges from Louisville selected the art works from 407 entries from artists in the U.S., Canada and Finland. Work was created in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. First, second and third place winners were chosen in each of nine categories, along with a selection of entries are included in the exhibition. APH InSights is organized by the American Printing House for the Blind for visually impaired and blind artists of all ages.

The exhibition of the artwork will be open to the public on Oct. 17 from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM and the next day, Saturday, October 18 from 8:00 AM until noon. The exhibition will be posted on the APH web site in December.
