Local connection to At First Sight, the new MGM movie that stars Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino, and opens in Louisville Friday, January 15, 1999.

News Release: Louisville, Kentucky, January 14, 1999

The American Printing House for the Blind (APH) is the oldest organization of its kind in the United States, and the world's largest not-for-profit company that creates and manufactures educational, workplace and life-style products and services for visually impaired and blind people. So, when MGM began to plan the production of At First Sight, they turned to APH to supply dozens of products that would be used in various scenes of the movie. Some of the items borrowed were educational items that would be found in a classroom setting. Other items, such as braille notebooks and a slate and stylus, could also be used in every-day life.

Dr. Tuck Tinsley III, president of APH, is pleased that MGM and the film makers did such diligent research. He says of them, "We commend MGM for the effort to create an authentic setting by using the actual products that we manufacture for blind and visually impaired people."

The American Printing House for the Blind has been located in Louisville, Kentucky since it was founded in 1858. In 1879 it became the main supplier of educational materials for blind and visually impaired students all over America. Today, it still creates and manufactures hundreds of products for students but also makes items for adults, including materials printed in large type or braille (tax forms, restaurant menus, etc.); cassette tapes and players, writing materials, and more.
