News Release: Louisville, Kentucky, October 16, 1997
June Morris, retired executive vice-president of the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), received the Wings of Freedom Award at the company's annual meeting October 16, 1997. Morris was an employee of APH for 37 years and dedicated much of her time and expertise to the field of educational research for visually impaired students.
Morris served as a consultant to several different states adapting competency tests for braille and large type readers and published numerous articles pertaining to educational research in the field of visual impairments. Her research on "learning through listening" had a direct result on the design of APH's cassette tape player/recorders and her studies also influenced the design of tactile graphics.
Among her outstanding achievements are the organization of the Kentucky chapter of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired and the establishment of Visually Impaired Preschool Services of Louisville, which she now serves as a board member.
The Wings of Freedom Award is bestowed on individuals who embody the ideals of the company's mission statement, which is to promote the independence of blind and visually impaired people by providing the special media, tools, and materials needed for education and life.
