InSights Artists to Receive Awards

Artists to receive awards at ceremony at Hyatt Hotel, downtown, Friday 13, 6:30 P.M. Awards are for the ninth annual APH InSights 2000 which features art by blind or visually impaired artists

Awards for APH InSights 2000, the annual international art competition organized by the American Printing House for the Blind will be presented October 13 at a ceremony held during the annual meeting of the Ex Offico Trustees of the Printing House. Forty-two blind or visually impaired artists will be honored and seventeen of them will come to Louisville to receive their awards in person. Among the artist-attendees are: Jane Strohmeier, of Cincinnati, Ohio who has created a whimsical Wind Chime, Anita Smith, Cambridge, Illinois, who has drawn a stunning Prickly Pear Cactus and ten-year-old Jonathan Covington, of Mission Viejo, California, who has created a captivating collage titled Bird of Color.

APH InSights is organized by the American Printing House for the Blind for visually impaired and blind artists of all ages. This project reflects APH's mission to "promote the independence of blind persons" by encouraging individuals to create original art.

APH InSights 2000 features seventy-nine works by artists from the U. S. and Canada. This is the ninth year for the competition. Participants range from preschool children to senior citizens, include professional artists as well as hobbyists, and school art classes. (See list following) Two judges from Louisville selected the art works from 414 entries in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. First, second and third place winners were chosen in each of nine categories, along with a selection of entries are included in the exhibition.
