Armadillo Army is a maze game designed to give hours of fun while providing practice for skills necessary to students with visual impairments.
The student with a visual impairment need not even think about how he is practicing lateral eye movements, vertical eye movements, searching skills, timing skills, visual discrimination skills, peripheral detection skills, eccentric viewing skills, and eye-hand coordination. He simply plays the game and gets practice while enjoying the thrill of zapping armadillos.
Exciting and directive sounds give the student with blindness the opportunity to practice listening and discrimination skills while navigating the maze and gathering up cactus jelly, jewels, and jalapeno peppers.
The game takes place in a maze, where Tex, a humanoid with a ten-gallon hat gathers up his goodies while keeping away from blue armadillos which roll at random throughout the maze. As Tex gathers up goodies, he gets points. When he gets enough points, he accumulates power with which he can send out a zapping ray from his finger to zap armadillos and make them disappear. As the player reaches higher levels of difficulty, he must also avoid a Texas tornado which threatens to gather up all the goodies as well as Tex. If Tex gets through all nine levels, he wins!
Armadillo Army can be played by students with low vision, blindness, as well as typical vision. A player can play alone, or with a friend. This type of arcade-style game builds confidence while it gives students with visual impairments common ground for discussion and interaction with their peers.
