Lou Harpenau
When did you start narrating for APH Studio?
Nov. 23, 1970
Which awards and honors?
Scourby Award, Non-Fiction, 1996
Convention Speaker for the Washington State Council of the Blind, 2000
Nominee: TORGI Award, Non-Fiction, 2001
The kinds of books you usually record:
Non-fiction: biographies, history, essays, reference works, narrative prose in general. Also periodical literature, magazines, etc. Technical writing, including medical/informational treatises.
The kind of books you prefer to record:
Biographies, histories, narrative prose. I like them because of my interest in history and historical figures, and because I can take advantage of my background and training in the clerical life and in broadcast journalism.
Your favorite book(s) that you've recorded at APH and why:
  • "Truman," by David McCullogh (a Pulitzer Prize-winning book, and deservedly so!)
  • "Merck Manual of Medical Information" - so complete, and such a challenge, and at 84 tracks (over 123 hours), the longest book recorded by one narrator in Talking Book history.
Your least favorite book(s) that you've recorded at APH and why:
I can't think of a "least favorite"; it seems I can find something to pique my interest in whatever book I'm recording.
Anything else?
Married - wife, Marilyn

Four daughters: Suzanne, Alana, Anne, Lynne (Anne and Lynne are our twins)

Three granddaughters: Mary, Lily, and Grace.
