- POWER CORD/AC OPERATION
Connect AC POWER CORD (REF-1) to 120-volt AC household outlet. (Power cord is accessible in the rear storage compartment [REF-22] on the recorder.)
The polarized AC line plug (one blade is wider) is a safety feature. The plug fits into the power outlet only one way. If the plug doesn't go into the outlet completely, turn the plug over and put it in the other way. If it still doesn't fit, contact a qualified electrician to change the outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.
Important: Prior to operation for the first time, or if batteries are totally discharged, allow 3 to 5 minutes for initial charge to build up in the internal Nickel-Cadmium battery. Leaving recorder plugged into a 120-volt AC outlet overnight or for a 20- hour period will fully charge the battery.
If the unit is not to be used for an extended period of time, it is recommended that it be unplugged from the AC outlet. This will help to extend battery life.
When battery operation is again desired, plug the unit into AC power and recharge the battery for 14-16 hours before use.

When desired portion has been reached, release FAST FORWARD or REWIND. Use the same procedure if you want to skip a portion or listen to the same segment again.
- TAPE MOTION SENSING
Located near the center of the cassette door is a well for TAPE MOTION indication (REF-2).
During PLAY, RECORD, REWIND/ REVIEW and FAST FORWARD/ PREVIEW modes, this device will permit the physical sensing of tape take-up spindle for user to identify the movement of tape. A light touch with your fingertip (in center of well) is sufficient to detect movement.
- RECORD OPERATION
This machine was designed to provide the user with the optimum operating time per cassette by offering four-track PLAY and RECORD capability with two speeds: 1-7/8 standard and 15/16 i.p.s. half-speed. 15/16 i.p.s. speed doubles the useful operating time. You can make 2-track and 4-track recordings at either 1-7/8 i.p.s. or half-speed of 15/16 i.p.s. Recordings made at 15/16 i.p.s. or 4-track must be used with this machine for playback. Recordings made on 2-track at 1-7/8 i.p.s. can be used with any standard cassette recorder for playback.
- Insert cassette by following previously explained procedure (previously recorded tapes can also be used, since machine automatically erases while recording).
- Select the desired TAPE SPEED (REF- 11) 1-7/8 i.p.s. or 15/16 i.p.s. respectively.
- Slide the SPEED (REF-17) control and PITCH (REF 18) to normal or "detent" (1.0) position.

NOTE: During RECORD operation, the SPEED and PITCH controls are defeated; however, it is a good practice to reset these controls to the detent position, otherwise in playback the unit may not PLAY at normal speed.
- Select the TAPE SIDE SWITCH (REF-12) position for the appropriate side to record. Always adhere to the sequential pattern as follows:
- FRONT position (1 and 2) the first time around for side 1 and 2 of cassette.
- BACK position (3 and 4) the second time around for side 3 and 4 of cassette.
- This machine can record through its built- in condenser microphone or from an external remote microphone. When an external microphone is used, the built-in MIC is automatically disconnected. Recordings can also be made from any remote source such as another tape recorder, radio, or television, when connected between the output jack of the remote external source and the AUX/IN jack (REF-26) of this tape recorder.
- Recording level is set automatically by an internal ALC (AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL) circuit for any type of recording program. VOLUME and TONE controls will not have any effect during RECORD operation.
AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL UPDATE / IMPROVEMENT This information is for those users of the Table Top Recorder who do "patch" recording. This is the process of using a cable to connect another audio source to your APH recorder to record a signal directly (without using the microphone).
Early in development, when ideas for improving the APH's Table-Top Recorder were being discussed, the problem of recording from one unit to another was raised. The concern was that while using the AUX-IN jack for "patch" recording, the level of the recorded material would not have the same audio consistency as the original recording. This was due to the ALC (Automatic Level Control) circuits having a recovery time of only 1 to 2 seconds after an audio signal is detected. During normal speech, this is usually not a problem. If a longer audio delay is detected, the ALC circuits would boost the amplifier gain up to a very high level, causing the recording to have a "waterfall noise" on the tape where no audio information is recorded.
Our solution to the problem was to extend the ALC time for the AUX-IN jack to reduce this problem. The Built In Microphone (BIM) and the EXT-MIC jack now have a 1 to 2 second ALC time delay, the same as our earlier recorders, while the AUX-IN jack now has a 5 to 10 second ALC time delay. This change in the function of the AUX-IN jack will delay the Automatic Level Control circuits from raising the recording amplifier level too quickly. This update will allow the users of the 5198A to "patch" record from other audio sources without the annoying "waterfall effect" that was present in earlier models.
The ALC circuits of the APH 5198A recorder start out at a low recording amplifier level, and increase to meet the recording level requirements according to the ALC time delay that is selected. With this increased time delay on the AUX-IN jack, the user will notice a slight reduction of audio level only at the initial "start-up" of the recording unit. When using the AUX-IN jack and recording from an external audio source to the 5198A, allow the recorder a few seconds to adjust its level by engaging the PAUSE button. The user can then adjust their external audio material to the proper position and level using the 5198A "variable monitor" ability and then release the PAUSE button to start the recording. As the user becomes more familiar with this function, we believe this operation will present no problems in producing quality "patch" recordings from external sources. 9/3/99
IMPORTANT: BUILT-IN MICROPHONE ON- OFF switch (REF-14) must be set to the On (down) position for BUILT-IN MICROPHONE (REF-13) recording.
- Push down REC button (REF-l0, the sixth button from the right, with no symbol). The PLAY button (REF-9, fifth button from the right with a symbol "O") will automatically depress. You are now recording using the built-in MIC. This unit has built-in erase guard, which prevents accidental erasure of recorded cassettes which have ERASE TABS in the cassette punched out. If RECORD BUTTON DOES NOT DEPRESS, SEE "PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ERASURE" in Section 2 for detailed explanation.
NOTE: While recording, the TAPE MOTION SENSOR can be used to determine whether there is tape movement.
- PAUSE -- During PLAY or RECORD modes, the 2-position PAUSE control (REF-5), when depressed, can interrupt the mode of operation and stop tape movement. To resume operation, depress and release PAUSE button and the machine will continue operation as originally selected.
- PLAYBACK -- Rewind tape to the beginning of the recorded program. Place unit in PLAY operation as outlined previously under No. 4 and refer to Operating Control Checklist.
AUTOMATIC STOP/SHUT OFF
When end of tape is reached in any operating mode, the unit will fully shut itself off and re- lease the engaged button to the OFF (up) position.
NOTE: The recorder will not automatically stop at the end of the tape during REWIND, FAST FORWARD, REVIEW or PREVIEW modes if the PAUSE key is engaged.
INDEXING A RECORDING
TONE INDEX Feature allows you to put a momentary signal on your recordings to catalog or identify your recording sections. In the FAST FORWARD/PREVIEW or REWIND/REVIEW modes, an audible, high- pitched signal "beep" identifies the selections you "indexed." You can catalog or identify your recording by either the length or number of beep patterns.
The tape can only be indexed in RECORD mode. Indexing allows identification of where a recorded selection starts or ends. To INDEX, do the following:
- While recording, press the INDEX button (REF-19, on top left side of cabinet) inward for approximately 2 to 10 seconds for each indexed signal. For example, if you wish to leave an index of 3 beeps, depress INDEX (while in REC) in 5-second intervals, three times. While INDEX button is depressed, other material will also continue to record.
NOTE: Depressing INDEX button (in RECORD mode) for 10 seconds in 1-7/8 i.p.s. speed, will give about a one-second beep of playback in PLAY mode while using FAST FORWARD/PREVIEW or REWIND /REVIEW modes to scan the tape.
- Some experimenting with length of index beeps and intervals between beeps will illustrate the ease and flexibility of this feature.
VOICE INDEX Feature: Voice Indexing enables the user to find a portion of a recorded tape in FAST FORWARD/PREVIEW mode when the desired index term is heard.
For operation, simultaneously depress FAST FORWARD and RECORD buttons and record your voice index term by speaking into the microphone.

- Built-in Charger: to periodically recharge the battery in your Recorder/Player.
- A low battery alarm in the record mode only will gently alert you when the Nickel- Cadmium battery needs to be recharged.
See Table Top Recorder Reference Diagrams.
AC OPERATION -- Remove power cord (REF-1) by pulling the plug part of cord from back storage area (REF-22). Insert power cord into 120-volt AC household outlet. (See POWER CORD/AC OPERATION regarding the polarized plug.)
NOTE: Feed power cord into compartment to shorten cord (you can adjust cord length as you choose) and always insert PLUG end last for complete storage. This will prevent jamming of power cord.
BATTERY OPERATION - Before operating your recorder on battery power for the first time, leave the recorder plugged into 120 Volt AC outlet for a 20-hour period to fully charge battery located inside the cabinet. The built-in charger will recharge the battery automatically while the power cord is connected to an AC outlet, whether the recorder is ON or OFF.
Nickel-Cadmium batteries are a special type of battery that can be recharged many times - 1000 or more recharges. When charged for 20 hours, the battery will operate your unit for up to 10 hours of continuous PLAY or about 5 to 6 hours in RECORD. The battery will discharge at a very slow rate when not in use. If the unit is not to be used for a 48 hour period of time, it is recommended that it be unplugged from the AC outlet. This will help to extend battery life.
When battery operation is again desired, plug the unit into AC power and recharge the battery for 14-16 hours before use. Battery life, under normal operating conditions, should be several years and replacement batteries are available directly from APH with complete user installation instructions. Dispose of the depleted battery in a proper manner in accordance with your state and local regulations.
CASSETTE INSERTION AND PLAY
Press the STOP/EJECT button (REF-6, second button from right, symbol "X") all the way down and the cassette carry door will pop open. Insert the cassette into the open tape carry door (see Fig. 1) with the exposed tape in the cassette facing forward. Push cassette into carry door until a "click" is heard (this latches auto cassette "kick-out" mechanism.) When inserting the cassette, it is recommended you push on the plastic portion of the cassette and not the exposed tape. Pushing directly on the tape could cause damage to the tape. Close the cassette carry door by pushing it downward until it snaps closed. Rewind a few seconds to take up any tape slack in cassette to prevent possible tape jamming.
- To play Side 1 of a standard cassette, insert cassette with "Side 1" up and slide the CASSETTE SIDE SWITCH (REF-12, the fourth switch from left side, square shaped) to SIDE 1 and 2 "front" position.
- To play, press PLAY button (REF-9, the fifth from right with symbol "O"), and adjust TONE (REF-15), VOLUME (REF-16), SPEED and PITCH controls (REF-17 & 18) to desired position. To stop tape, press STOP/EJECT button (REF-6).
- To play Side 2, just turn cassette over so that "Side 2" is up. The tape movement for normal play and record operation is from left to right.

TAPE MOTION SENSING WINDOW
The special opening in the CASSETTE DOOR (REF-2) allows fingertip sensing of tape motion. This feature is especially useful in RECORD operation and will indicate by finger touch when the recorder is in operation.
IMPORTANT: Never use excessive or pro- longed pressure that could stop rotation. Stopping the indicator for more than a few seconds could cause the tape to wrap around the capstan or pinch roller and damage the cassette.
CASSETTE SIDE SWITCH
There are two different types of tape head configurations used in the industry for manufacture of tape recorders. See Fig. 3 & 4. To provide optimum PLAY & RECORD time and performance for 4-track and 2-speed operations, APH and the Library of Congress, adopted a new configuration specifically for the Talking Book application. See Fig. 2.
- Fig. 4 is used for conventional recorders for play and recording of monaural programs, which have only two tracks, one on each side of cassette.
- Fig. 3 shows 4-track, which is capable of play and record modes for program materials. For stereo, two tracks are used at the same time (called left and right channels) and therefore, the cassette has only two sides. Stereo tapes can be played on this recorder since both the "left" and "right" channels can be played on your APH machine. If a stereo tape is played in the MONO mode, the "right" channels will play backwards and sound will be garbled.
- Fig. 2: the APH machine (monaural) can play and record each of the four tracks separately, which utilizes all four sides of the cassette for extended operation.
The CASSETTE SIDE switch (REF-12, the fourth item from left, square shaped) is used for playback of Talking Book cassettes and standard cassettes, which allows selection of each of four tracks on the tape when used as follows:
TALKING BOOK CASSETTE (4-TRACK)
Four-track cassette tapes are used for RECORD and PLAYBACK of Talking Book cassettes, which utilize only a quarter of the tape for each track as follows:
- Set the CASSETTE SIDE switch (REF-12) to SIDE 1-2 position to PLAY or RECORD the cassette tape on side 1.
- Flip the cassette over to use side 2.
- To use cassette tape on side 3, you flip the cassette over again, and set the CASSETTE SIDE switch to SIDE 3-4 position.
- For the last quarter of the 4-track tape (see Fig. 2), flip the cassette tape over again to use side 4.
STANDARD CASSETTE (2-TRACK)
When playing standard cassettes, the SIDE switch must always be left in the SIDE 1-2 position.
NOTE: 2-track cassettes (often referred to as sides of the cassette tapes) are used in standard (MONAURAL) cassette recorder/ players and utilize one-half of the tape for Side 1. To PLAY or RECORD the remaining half (other side), which is Side 2, you must flip the cassette over (see Fig. 4).

TAPE SPEED CONTROLS
TAPE SPEED 1-7/8 - 15/16 SWITCH (REF-11, the third switch from left of cabinet, square shaped). Your tape unit operates at either 1-7/8 or 15/16 i.p.s. (inches per second) tape speed setting in PLAY or RECORD. 1-718 i.p.s. speed is required for tapes you want to play on regular cassette recorders, in order to exchange correspondence with others who have standard cassette recorders.
NOTE: Be sure to select SIDE 1 and 2 position of SIDE switch if recordings are made for other than an APH Talking Book Machine. Set TAPE SPEED SWITCH to cabinet "front" position for 1-7/8 i.p.s. speed, which is identified by two raised dots.
Tape recorded at 15/16 (half speed) and in the 4-track configuration, such as APH Talking Book cassettes, allow four hours of playback on one C-60 recorded cassette and six hours with a C-90 cassette. Set SPEED switch (REF- 11) to cabinet back position for 15/16 i.p.s. speed (which is identified by only one dot).
NOTE: Tapes recorded at 15/16 i.p.s. are compatible with other APH models and Library of Congress players labeled C-73 and higher. If you record at 15/16 i.p.s. and play back at 1-7/8 i.p.s. (the speed of standard recorders), you will hear a high-pitched "Donald Duck(r)" type sound that is not comprehensible.
SPEED CONTROL (REF-17, slide-type located on left top side of cabinet). When unit is in RECORD, this control is automatically disconnected to prevent accidental recording of tapes at non-standard speeds. However, while recording it is advisable that the SPEED control be set to "detent," (1.0) position, in readiness for playback of your recording.
PITCH CONTROL (REF-18, slide-type located on left top side of cabinet). When unit is in RECORD, this control is automatically disconnected to prevent accidental recording of tapes at non-standard speeds. However, while recording it is advisable that the PITCH control be set to "detent", (1.0 position, in readiness for playback of your recording.

The SPEED and PITCH controls) are used for PLAY mode only to adjust speed for +100% (2 times, 1.0 to 2.0 on right side of scale) above to -20% (.8 times, .8 to 1 on left side of scale) below the nominal 1-7/8 or 15/16 i.p.s. speed settings. While playing a cassette tape, you can adjust for any desired listening speed. For example, at maximum setting of +100%, a 60-minute tape will play back in approximately 30 minutes.
RECORD OPERATION
This machine was designed to provide the user with optimum operating time in both RECORD and PLAYBACK modes. Your machine has the capability to play and record on 2 or 4 tracks. The addition of 15/16 i.p.s. speed enables you to double the useful operating time.
NOTE: Most standard tape recorders will not operate on 15/16 i.p.s. speed.
- Hold CASSETTE TAPE with the front (edge with large holes) towards you and SIDE 1 (label side) facing upwards.
- Place CASSETTE on top of push-buttons. With the tape inside the cassette facing you, slide the cassette back into the carry door (REF-3 and 4) until you hear it click into place.
- Close cassette carry door by pushing it downward until it snaps closed.
- Slide the TAPE SPEED switch (REF-11) to 1-7/8 i.p.s. for standard recording speed, or 15/16 i.p.s. for half-speed and tape economy. Please note that half-speed recordings are compatible with all other APH recorders and Library of Congress players (Models No. C-73 and higher).
- Slide TAPE SIDE switch (REF-12) to the track you wish to record. Always use the same sequence.
- SIDES 1 and 2 is the front position of switch and allows you to make recordings which are compatible with standard cassette recorders at 1-7/8 i.p.s.
- SIDES 3 and 4 is the back position of switch.
NOTE: Slide SPEED and PITCH controls (REF-17 & 18, located on left top side of cabinet) to "detent" position. During RECORD operation the VARIABLE SPEED and PITCH controls are defeated; however, it is good practice to reset these controls to the "DETENT" (1) position, otherwise in playback the unit may not PLAY at normal speed.
- Place the STEREO/MONO switch into the "MONO" mode.
NOTE: The unit will not operate in the RECORD mode if the STEREO/MONO switch is left in the "STEREO" position.
- Slide CONDENSER MICROPHONE ON/OFF-"MONITOR" switch (REF-14, first switch form left side of cabinet) to the ON position.
- Depress the REC button (REF-10, the six button from the right, with no symbols). The PLAY button (REF-9, the fifth button from the right with symbol "O"), will automatically depress. You are now recording. To protect your pre-recorded tapes, this unit has a built-in ERASE GUARD, which prevents accidental erasure of pre-recorded cassettes. If the REC button does not depress, see "PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ERASURE".
2-TRACK RECORDING
- To record cassettes that are compatible with standard recording formats, and are interchangeable with either monaural or stereo tape recorders, always use:
- TAPE SPEED SWITCH in 1-7/8 i.p.s. (towards front) position (REF-11).
- TAPE SIDE SWITCH in 1 and 2 (towards front) position (REF-12) to record on side 1 and 2 of the cassette.
4-TRACK RECORDING
To RECORD cassettes that are compatible with APH or Library of Congress Talking Book recording format always record in the following sequence:
- TAPE SPEED SWITCH in 1-7/8 i.p.s. or 15/16 i.p.s. for extended recording capacity.
- TAPE SIDE SWITCH (REF-12) in 1 and 2 position to record on side 1 and 2 of the cassette tape, then set SIDE SWITCH to 3 and 4 position to record on side 3 and 4 of cassette tape.
NOTE: Your can use standard cassette tapes for recording in 4-track format.

- Talk normally into the built-in CONDENSER MICROPHONE (REF-13, the third item from the left side of cabinet, which is rectangular in shape, with slots and flush with the cabinet surface). To obtain optimum re-cording quality, place the recorder with the microphone freely exposed to the sound source and as close as convenient.
If using an optional remote microphone with an ON/OFF switch, slide the MIC switch to ON. To temporarily stop recording, slide the MIC switch to OFF.

NOTE: The built-in AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL (ALC) will adjust the proper recording level regardless of volume or tone settings.
- If you finish recording before end of tape is reached, merely press the STOP/EJECT button (REF-6, the second button from right; symbol "X"). To listen to what you have recorded, press REWIND button (REF-8, the fourth button from right; symbol: "arrow pointing left"), until the tape returns to the beginning. Then press PLAY button (REF-9, the fifth button from the right; symbol: "O") and slide VOLUME (REF-16) and TONE (REF-15) controls to your preferred listening level.
- REWIND (REF-8)
When not in PLAY mode, press REWIND to run the tape back to the beginning or to any point on your recording. Press STOP button after you have rewound the desired amount.
- FAST FORWARD (REF-7)
When not in PLAY mode, press FAST FORWARD to advance the tape. Press STOP button after you have reached the desired location on the tape.
- REVIEW/PREVIEW
This feature is helpful in finding the beginning or end of the recorded segment on the tape.
When in PLAY mode, press and hold FAST FORWARD or REWIND and listen for change from noise to silence (end of recording) or from silence to noise (beginning of recording).
When desired portion has been reached, release FAST FORWARD or REWIND. Use the same procedure if you want to skip a portion or listen to the same segment again.
RECORDING HINT: Using a remote microphone automatically disconnects the built-in CONDENSER MICROPHONE. The optional microphone (illustrated above) has two different sized plugs (2.5mm and 3.5mm) with a 10mm space between them, and was designed so they can only be inserted into the "MIC" jacks. The dual pin plug of the remote microphone plugs into the third and fourth jacks from the right side, identified by four raised dots, with the smaller diameter pin towards the "left" side of cabinet front. Note that the illustrated remote microphone has an ON-OFF switch that enables you to turn the circuit ON/OFF by remote control. The "ON" position is towards the microphone element. Use the SENSING WINDOW to monitor or confirm that the unit is ON or OFF. When your recording is complete, press the STOP button to completely turn the unit off.
NOTE: When the unit is operating in the RECORD mode, and the remote microphone is removed, the unit will automatically switch back to the built-in CONDENSER MICROPHONE (CONDENSER MICROPHONE ON/OFF "MONITOR" switch must be set to ON position) and will continue recording. For best recordings, always place the unit with the microphone as close as possible to the sound source. Due to the extreme sensitivity of the built-in MICROPHONE, there may be a small amount of background noise audible during playback.
This unit is equipped with a convenient PAUSE button (REF-5) which will stop the recorder in RECORD and PLAY modes for as long as you want. While preparing your next selection or program, simply depress the PAUSE button. When you choose to continue recording (or playback), simply depress PAUSE button to release. No tape will be used while the PAUSE button is depressed. This feature is especially helpful in recording live broadcasts, to eliminate commercials, or announcements between programs. |
BE SURE TO SET CONDENSER MISC SWITCH TO "OFF" POSITION |
NOTE: When using PAUSE button (while recording with BUILT-IN MIC), the sensitive microphone may record the click sound you normally hear when depressing the mechanical PAUSE switch.
AUTOMATIC STOP/SHUT OFF INDEX
When your recorder is operating in any mode and the end of tape is reached, the unit will automatically shut itself off both electrically and mechanically. Automatic shut-off is activated by the tension at the end of tape, which signals a shut off mechanism to stop and to turn off the machine. The engaged button(s) will then return to the OFF (up) position.
NOTE: The recorder will not automatically stop at the end of the tape during REWIND, FAST FORWARD, REVIEW or PREVIEW modes if the PAUSE key is engaged.
TAPE ERASE
There are two ways to erase unwanted recorded material with your tape recorder.
- The first method is to record over the unwanted recording. This replaces the unwanted recording with a new recording.
- To erase sides 1, 2, 3, or 4 or the tape completely do the following:
- Set the BUILT-IN MIC ON-OFF switch (REF-14) to the up "OFF" position.

- Insert the cassette with the side up (1, 2, 3, or 4) you wish to erase.
- Press the RECORD button as you would if you were making a recording. You are now erasing one of the four tracks of the tape. When you have erased the entire tape, your recorder will shut off automatically.
NOTE: The APH Model 5198A is not completely compatible with 2 track tape recorders. Because of the special APH erase head, the 5198A will not totally erase tapes previously recorded on a 2-track machine.
INDEXING A RECORDING
TONE INDEX Feature: Records a 70 Hz tone signal on tape for cueing or for indexing material for quick identification when scanning tapes of specific previously recorded material.
| INDEX |
 |
PUSH INDEX BUTTON |
- While recording at the end of any selection desired, press the INDEX button inward for about 2-10 seconds for each index signal. When the INDEX button is pressed, a barely audible (low frequency 70 Hz) tone is recorded on the tape, along with whatever else you are recording. For example, if you wish to index the tape with three beeps, press the INDEX button (while in REC) three times in 5-second intervals, and with at least five seconds between each index. For best individual results, do some experimenting on length of index beeps and intervals between beeps.
- With unit in PLAY and in PREVIEW or REVIEW mode, the recorded INDEX tone becomes a high-pitched "beep" sound, with the number and length of beeps you indexed on your recording.
- If you wish a replay (return to a specific index selection), press the FAST FORWARD or REWIND button along with PLAY and count the number of beeps previously recorded.

NOTE: In playback mode, an index recorded for 10 seconds is about equal to a one-second beep sound when scanning in REVIEW/PREVIEW. By coding your recordings with the INDEX button, material can be quickly located without the need of playing each section. Experiment in both the length and spacing of index tones during record to best suit your own needs for CUElNG in PLAY mode using REVIEW or PREVIEW.
CUEING while in PLAY mode allows rapid audible scanning of previous recorded indexed selections in PREVIEW and REVIEW modes. Reduce VOLUME when scanning, if the cueing sound level is annoyingly high.
VOICE INDEX
Voice Index allows a user to place a voice marker at a desired location on a tape. Such a voice marker can be easily recognized and understood when using the PREVIEW feature. An example of a Voice Index marker is, "Chapter 2," placed between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
TO RECORD A VOICE INDEX MARKER
- FAST FORWARD or REWIND to the segment of tape where a Voice Index is desired.
- Press the STOP button.
- Simultaneously press RECORD and FAST FORWARD and start indexing by speaking into the microphone.
- To end the index segment, release both buttons. (NOTE: It may be necessary to press the STOP button to disengage the FAST FORWARD button.)
The recorded information will be audible only in REVIEW/PREVIEW mode, but only understandable in PREVIEW mode.
MONITOR RECORDINGS
If you choose, plug stereo earphones (optional accessory) into the 3.5mm HEADPHONE JACK (REF-23, the first jack from left side) to monitor (listen to) programs you RECORD when using Patch Cords for direct recordings. NOTE: A stereo headphone can also be used for private listening. When the stereo headphone is plugged into your recorder, the recorder's speaker is automatically disconnected.
MICROPHONE ON/OFF - "MONITOR" SWITCH (REF-14)
must be in OFF position to MONITOR (listen from the recorder speaker) the material being recorded. You can only MONITOR through the recorder speaker when using the optional remote MIC or the AUX/lN JACK while you're recording. The MONITOR loudness is adjustable by setting the VOLUME control to a comfortable listening level.

REWIND/REVIEW (REF-8, the fourth button from right; symbol: "arrow pointing left").
- REWIND: In this mode the button is a latching type and will remain pressed down. To run the tape back to the beginning, press the REWIND/REVIEW button. When the beginning of the tape is reached operation will automatically stop.
- REVIEW: While in PLAY position you can momentarily review (or rewind) a portion of the recorded tape. Push the REWIND/REVIEW button and the tape will rewind until you release it, then the unit will resume its normal play operation. This feature allows quick scanning or repeat play of hard-to-understand sections, and will seek out index beeps (called CUElNG) without resetting the controls.

FAST FORWARD/PREVIEW (REF-7, the third button from right; symbol: "arrow pointing right").
- FAST FORWARD: In this mode the button is a latching type and will remain pressed down. To skip over portions of the tape quickly, press the FAST FORWARD/ PREVIEW button. Press the STOP/EJECT button to stop the tape and return unit to the neutral mode.
- PREVIEW: While in PLAY mode, you can momentarily preview (or fast forward) your recorded tape. Press and hold the button and listen for the INDEX tones or for silent periods between selections. This is also called CUElNG. To stop the tape, merely release the button and continue PLAY operation.
PLAYBACK OPERATION
This Recorder/Player will play a standard cassette or a Talking Book cassette at either 1-7/8 i.p.s. or 15/16 i.p.s. speeds as follows:
- Insert the cassette you wish to play as described under CASSETTE INSERTION with Side 1 facing upward.
- Set the TAPE SIDE switch to Side 1-2 (towards front) position to play standard cassettes.
- Select the TAPE SPEED (REF-11) towards "front" for standard speed tapes of 1-7/8 i.p.s., or toward "back" for half-speed or Talking Book 15/16 i.p.s. speed as indicated on cassette label.

- Press the PLAY button and slide VOLUME and TONE controls to comfortable listening level. When playing the tape, you can adjust the SPEED and PITCH controls (REF-17 & 18) for a faster or slower listening speed.
NOTE: If you hear a "rumble"-sounding voice or a "Donald Duck(r)" sound when you depress the PLAY button, the TAPE SPEED switch should be changed.
- When the end of tape is reached, the unit will automatically shut itself off and the PLAY button will return to the OFF (up) position. To turn the unit off before the end of the tape is reached, merely press the STOP/EJECT button.
Whenever you make a recording, any previous recording on the tape is automatically erased.

When you have a recording you want to keep permanently, break out the left tab (located on the rear edge of the cassette) of the side you want to save as shown in illustration. When a cassette with the tab broken out is inserted in the tape unit, accidental erasure is prevented by a lever in the mechanism that keeps the RECORD button from depressing. Cellophane tape can be placed over the opening if you decide later to record over the original recording. Similarly, you can record over purchased prerecorded cassettes, which always come with the tabs removed.
PLEASE NOTE: Your machine is equipped with a cassette sensing mechanism. This mechanism prevents RECORD button from being depressed when cassette is not in unit.
IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY
Please review the following:
- Is power cord plugged into AC outlet?
- Has the battery been recharged?
- Cassette SIDE switch set correctly?
- Does the TAPE SPEED switch match tape speed of 1-7/8 or 15/16 i.p.s. recorded tapes?
- Is tape spindle rotating in TAPE MOTION SENSING indicator? If yes, see note below.
- No tape movement: is unit in PAUSE mode?
- Is VOLUME knob above minimum position, or headphone plugged into ear jack?
- PLAY button will not engage: either at end of tape or defective tape. If end of tape, either flip tape over to play other side or rewind to beginning.
- RECORD button will not depress: either using prerecorded tape with erase guard tabs punched out or no cassette in recorder.
NOTE: Most tapes (either blank and prerecorded) come with a leader at the start of the tape that cannot be recorded. Always allow 5 or 10 seconds at the beginning of the tape prior to recording or when listening to a recorded tape before suspecting trouble. Use TAPE MOTION SENSING indicator to determine if tape is rotating.
CAUTION
As with any AC operated product, precautions should be observed during handling and use to prevent electrical shock. Electronic products of this type should not be immersed in water or used in bathing areas when on AC power. Extreme temperatures such as found near a hot radiator, in a car trunk, or on a car seat when it's parked in the summer sun, may damage the cabinet or components in your unit.
Never leave unit in PLAY mode with power turned off (that is, when tape is not moving), as damage to your tape recorder may result.
CLEANING THE HEADS
Iron oxide particles from the magnetic tape will, in time, build upon the parts that come in direct contact with the tape. These deposits can cause incomplete erasure, a "muffled" sound during playback. It is recommended that the heads and capstan be cleaned after every 25 hours of use; more often if playback has deteriorated. To clean, use a cotton swab moistened with an audio head cleaner solution or isopropyl alcohol, then wipe dry with another swab. Always unplug the power cord when using a liquid cleaner and allow 30 minutes drying time.
CABINET CARE
The cabinet should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with water only (be sure power cord is unplugged). Never use a polish or strong cleaning agent on the cabinet since these can damage its finish. Do not store your unit in an excessively hot place such as near a heat register or in a car parked in the summer sun.
