Illuminating Curiosity with The Dot Experience

Have you ever wondered how others experience light? Step into a world of brightness, shadows, and experimentation with The Dot Experience, coming to several libraries across southern Indiana from June 9–13. Explore the excitement of light and shadow through interactive activities, creative play, and fresh perspectives that illuminate how we all experience the world in unique ways!

Light and shadow are fundamental aspects of our daily experience. Yet, their intricate relationship and the way they interact with human vision may not be as familiar to everyone. Understanding these connections, particularly in the context of blindness or low vision, is key to expanding our knowledge of how people perceive and interact with their environments in different ways.

The program begins with an introduction to the fundamental principles of how light and shadow are created and perceived. As part of this exploration, guests will experiment with different light sources, observing how variations in brightness, movement, and placement affect visibility. They’ll also investigate how shadows, contrast, and color influence perception; key factors in designing environments and tools for individuals with low vision or CVI. Guests will then expand their understanding by learning about different conditions that affect vision, with a particular focus on Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). CVI is a neurological condition that affects the brain’s ability to process visual information, rather than an issue with the eyes themselves. Think of it as two roommates that just moved in but aren’t close friends yet!

A highlight of the program is the opportunity for guests to design and create their own version of a Swirly Mat: a tool developed by the American Printing House for the Blind (APH). Inspired by real-world devices used by children with CVI, the Swirly Mat is designed to support the development of visual processing skills by strengthening the connection between the eyes and the brain. These colorful, durable mats can be paired with light boxes to help assess visual characteristics such as color preference, movement sensitivity, visual field preference, and visually guided reach. By creating their own Swirly Mats, guests not only gain hands-on design experience, but also insight into the kinds of tools that support accessible learning and development.

Beyond the scientific and technical aspects, the program emphasizes self-reflection and empathy development. Participants are encouraged to consider how vision differences shape people’s experiences and interactions with the world around them.

The Dot Experience’s initiative not only educates guests about visual science but also promotes inclusion and understanding, skills that are vital for building compassionate communities. We look forward to welcoming guests to this enlightening program that bridges science, empathy, and creativity!
