Come hang out with The Dot Experience at the How-To Festival on Saturday, May 10th at the Louisville Main Public Library. We’ll share easy, thoughtful ways to adapt your space — whether it’s for your next book club meeting, a backyard barbecue, or your kid’s next playdate!
Event Overview
The How-To Festival is back and celebrating twelve years of hands-on learning! This free, interactive, and fun-filled event features over 50 “how-to” sessions led by local experts. From car and bike repair, to crafts, dance, music, business, art, gardening, and beyond, there’s something for everyone! As part of the How-To Festival, The Dot Experience is excited to show you how small changes can make a big difference in creating a more welcoming and accessible environment. Get hands-on with assistive technology, explore adaptive techniques, and pick up practical tips you can use at home and in your community.
Content and Activities
Split into three engaging stations, this hands-on experience invites guests to explore how simple adaptations can make a home more welcoming, functional, and inclusive for everyone.
Kitchen Station
Step into an accessible kitchen setup where you can test out a variety of adaptive tools designed to support independence and safety. Try measuring spoons labeled with braille, one-armed cutting boards, and utensils with ergonomic, easy-grip handles. Explore smart appliances that make cooking more intuitive. Whether you’re whipping up a meal for one or preparing a dinner party, these tools make the kitchen more usable for people of all abilities.
Bedroom Station
Discover how a few thoughtful changes can turn a bedroom into a peaceful, accessible retreat. Learn about smart lighting, easy-reach organizers, and bed shakers that help make bedroom routines more manageable. Test high contrast switches, smart home controls, and cozy, sensory-friendly materials that support relaxation and independence. This station focuses on comfort, safety, and creating a space where everyone can rest and recharge.
Adaptive Play Station
Explore the joyful world of inclusive play through hands-on demonstrations of adaptive toys and sensory-friendly materials. Learn how universally designed play spaces can encourage every child to engage. Try toys with tactile feedback, audio cues, and large, easy-to-activate buttons, designed to promote creativity, motor skills, and social interaction. Adaptive play isn’t just fun — it’s a powerful tool for learning and connection!
