CloseSix Ways to Bring The Dot Experience to Your Classroom
The future of museums is being built right here in Louisville! Opening next fall, The Dot Experience will be the American Printing House for the Blind’s bold new step in its 165-year mission to make learning accessible for everyone. This innovative space will combine history, technology, and hands-on exploration to help visitors of all ages discover, dream, and explore differently. But why wait for opening day? The Kentuckiana community can experience The Dot Experience right now through interactive, thought-provoking programs we’re bringing directly to schools and local organizations.
Decoding Braille
Think of braille as more than just dots on a page — it’s a system of language, music, and math that opens entire worlds. In this program, students explore how braille connects to problem-solving, communication, and literacy. Along the way, they’ll discover the fascinating history of written systems and how people who are blind or low vision have worked to make information accessible for centuries. It’s hands-on and a great way to boost teamwork and critical thinking.
Light and Shadow
What do light and shadows have to do with how we see? How do people who are blind or low vision experience light and shadow in the world? In this program, students experiment with light and shadow while also learning about Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). They’ll even build a device designed to help children with CVI strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain. It’s a learning experience that connects science concepts with social understanding!
I Am Helen Keller
Students may know the iconic image of young Helen at the water pump, but do they know about Helen Keller the activist, college graduate, author, world traveler, and advocate? This program introduces students to Helen’s full story, supported by the world’s largest collection of her personal belongings, writings, and artifacts — right here at APH. It’s a powerful way to connect history, biography, and social change with one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.
Making Sense of Things
We rely on our senses every day, but most of us default to sight and hearing without realizing just how powerful our other senses are. This program flips that idea on its head by encouraging students to explore the world through multiple senses: touch, taste, smell, movement, and more. It’s an invitation to share perspectives, compare experiences, and celebrate the many ways people receive information.
Innovation Welcomes Everyone
Accessibility helps everyone, not just those it was originally designed for. (Ever read a new book with audio?) In this design challenge, students are encouraged to think like inventors! Explore how systems, products, and environments can be made more inclusive. It’s creative problem-solving with a purpose: designing a world that welcomes everyone.
A Voice for Many
Helen Keller wasn’t just a symbol of perseverance, she was a fearless advocate who used her platform to fight for peace, justice, and the rights of marginalized people. In this program, students step into Helen’s shoes through stories, discussions, and hands-on activities that highlight her enduring legacy. They’ll also learn about Helen and other voices of our past who championed equal rights. The goal? To help students see themselves as changemakers, too.
