Iris Board is an all-in-one typing instruction solution designed for students who are blind or low vision. Built around a compact Raspberry Pi keyboard, it includes integrated typing software, text-to-speech, structured lessons, practice activities, and engaging games without requiring a separate computer, screen reader, or prior knowledge of the keyboard. Students receive spoken instructions and immediate audio feedback as they build keyboard familiarity, accuracy, speed, and confidence. Its compact, durable design resembles a standard desktop keyboard and connects easily to an included speaker. An external monitor can also be used for students who benefit from visual access. Iris Board’s primary benefit is providing an affordable, approachable pathway to independent keyboarding. By combining progressive instruction with game-based practice and customizable lessons and assessments, it helps students develop essential technology skills for classroom participation, future employment, and everyday independence.
Iris Board is named after retired Alabama School for the Blind technology teacher, Iris Hamlin. We thank Mrs. Hamlin for her many years of service to our community.
